Program Description

The Online Teaching Endorsement Program prepares candidates to plan, design, and deliver instruction to P-12 learners in online learning environments.  The Online Teaching Endorsement was approved by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission in December 2008, and is available for candidates who hold a valid, clear/renewable certificate in any teaching field.  Recommendation for the endorsement is based on successful completion of: the three-course sequence, a field-based practicum (completed as part of CIED 7603), and all items on the Online Teaching Endorsement Competency Checklist.

The three-course curriculum is designed to fulfill requirements for recommendation for the Online Teaching Endorsement as outlined in Rule 505-3-.85 (http://www.gapsc.com/Rules/index.asp).

The rules for the Online Teaching Endorsement, published in December, 2006 by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission, were very clear about the curricular requirements that must be addressed by approved programs. The specified standards and outcomes were derived from the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) Educational Technology Standards for All Teachers (NETS-T). These specifications were closely followed when developing the three courses; all standards are addressed by the three-course curriculum as designed. Each course, as well as the proposed three-course endorsement, has been reviewed and approved by the Valdosta State University College of Education Teacher Education Council, College of Education Executive Committee, and Valdosta State University Academic Committee.

Experiential learning, application of knowledge, and the enhancement of professionalism are vital components of each class. The program emphasizes mostly shorter, concentrated courses (7 weeks), taught on a professional development model, which are competency-based, and require self-evaluation and reflection.

Valdosta State University is the offering institution of the three-course sequence and the endorsement-recommending institution. VSU also collaborates with Georgia Southern University for the delivery of a related, but independent M.Ed. Instructional Technology program, of which the courses in the Online Teaching Program are electives.

Highly qualified graduate faculty members from Valdosta State University teach the courses. This three-course, nine-hour, online endorsement can be completed in two to three semesters - about 6 to 9 months. Courses are offered on a continuous basis allowing for part-time enrollment. No campus visits are required to complete the program.

Students in the online program benefit from a highly interactive setting that promotes leadership, collegiality, and communication skills. Professional educators find that the Online Teaching Program emphasizes application of acquired knowledge and skills in their classrooms and schools through the completion of a one semester online teaching practicum. Teachers in the program come from a range of classroom settings and subject areas. The expected increase in the number and type of online courses offered in both higher education and the P-12 educational arena will provide a strong need for professional development in online teaching and course design.

Students enrolled in the program will use the online courses to conduct all work, including team functions, projects, and discussion posts, and scenarios. Students also have access to academic resources, such as an online library. Courses are mainly asynchronous. Some group online meetings may be required. Students will participate in IP videoconferencing/ audio-conferencing for instruction, presentation, delivery of instructional modules, and field experience supervision. The courses combine text materials, scenarios, online team projects and assignments, as well as discussions and written project work. Grades may be based primarily on projects, lesson plans, scenarios, and participation in course and team activities.

Valdosta State University is accredited by National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). The Online Teaching Endorsement is only available for candidates who already hold valid, clear/renewable teaching certificates. Endorsements are granted by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission, based upon completion of all requirements, recommendation of a representative of the approved institution, and filing of appropriate application materials.

Credentialing or credit for the Online Teaching Endorsement Program for educators in arenas outside the P-12 setting is not offered by this program.  Educators in other fields, including those in higher education settings, should consider the certificate in online teaching program.
