Program Description

Are you interested in understanding human lifespan development? How about the various social and psychological factors that affect the lives of children and families?

Earn an online bachelor’s degree in Human Development and Family Science at Georgia Southern and bridge science to theory and theory to practice with classroom and hands-on experiences Georgia Southern University’s Human Development & Family Science degree program takes a family-oriented approach to lifespan development. Designed to provide a strong background in the social and behavioral sciences related to child development, family development and the administration of programs for children and families, the Human Development & Family Science major gives you the tools you need to make an immediate and profound difference in the lives of others. The degree will prepare you for careers working with people of all ages, including early childhood education centers, adoption and foster agencies, child advocacy and sexual assault centers, behavioral therapy programs, and assisted living centers.

Traditional Freshmen

The Office of Admissions considers the following when evaluating students for admission to Georgia Southern University.

High School Curriculum
Your High School GPA is calculated by the Office of Admissions using the 17 Required High School Curriculum courses listed at the bottom of this page. Additional information can be found at Staying on Course. Grades will be used as listed on your official high school transcript. If you received a GED, click the “GED Students” tab above to review your options.

High School GPA
Georgia Southern would like for students to have a 2.5 or higher High School GPA on the 17 courses noted above. However, all applicants, regardless of GPA, will be evaluated for admission.

SAT or ACT Test Scores
First-year students applying to Georgia Southern University for any 2023 semester (through the summer 2024 semester) can be admitted without an ACT or SAT score, if they have a GPA of 3.2 or higher.*

Students who have a GPA of less than 3.2 should submit official ACT or SAT scores along with their high school transcript to be considered for admission.

Students are required to submit official SAT or ACT scores to Georgia Southern from the testing agency. Visit the College Board and ACT websites for available test dates (SAT Code: 5253 / ACT Code: 0830). We also offer the ACT-On Campus on the Statesboro and Armstrong Campuses for students who have already applied to Georgia Southern. Learn more and register on the Testing Services website. Georgia Southern would like for students to have the test scores noted below; however, all applicants, regardless of test scores, will be evaluated for admission.

Adult & Non-Traditional Freshmen

Acceptance is based on the following criteria:

  • Have been out of high school at least five years or high school class graduated at least five years ago.
  • Hold a high school diploma from an accredited or approved high school as specified in the Board of Regents policy section 402.0101 or have satisfactorily completed the GED, HiSET, or TASC.
  • Have earned between zero (0) and 29 transferable semester credit hours.
  • Have a 2.0 or higher on all attempted college work.*

Upon admission, you may be required to take the ACCUPLACER test, a computerized placement test that measures skills in math, reading, and writing. Contact the Academic Success Center to schedule a time to take the test. The ACCUPLACER must be completed prior to enrollment. Contact the Academic Success Center for more details.

Adult & Non-Traditional Transfers

Most adult transfer students are actually admitted as a regular transfer student. Learn more about transfer admissions here.

Acceptance is based on the following criteria:

  • Have been out of high school at least five years or high school class graduated at least five years ago.
  • Hold a high school diploma from an accredited or approved high school as specified in the Board of Regents policy section 402.0101 or have satisfactorily completed the GED, HiSET, or TASC.
  • Have earned 30+ transferable semester credit hours.
  • Have a 2.0 or higher on all attempted college work.*

If you have been out of college for five or more years, we strongly recommend that you contact the Academic Success Center to learn more about the services provided to help you succeed in college.

Transfer and spring/fall transient students who have taken remedial, learning support, and/or required high school curriculum make-up courses in college must:

  • Exit those courses successfully, and
  • Earn credit for Area A equivalent courses that correspond to the mandated remedial/learning support courses with a “C” or higher.
