Associate of Science in Medical Laboratory Technology

The Albany State University - Darton College of Health Professions’ two-year Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) program prepares graduates to practice as laboratory technicians in hospitals, clinics, physicians' offices, and other healthcare facilities. Graduates are eligible for the national certifying exams. The MLT Program is offered in both a traditional classroom format and a combination of online and distance learning formats.

Mission Statement:

The mission of the Medical Laboratory Technology program is to provide educational opportunities and related services to qualified students pursuing an entry-level career as a registered Medical Laboratory Technician. Upon successful completion of the program, the students will earn an Associate of Science Degree and will be academically eligible for national board examinations. Beneficiaries of the program include the students, the college, the community, the profession, and other health care providers. Program stability and viability will be ensured through a process of continuous quality assessment and improvement.

Program Goals:

• Provide students with a broad educational background utilizing a variety of resources and experiences.
• Provide undergraduate MLT curriculum based on current needs.
• Develop the students’ professional attitudes and ethics required by the laboratory profession.
• Educate the students on the merits of continuing education.
• Provide southwest Georgia’s need for Medical Laboratory Technicians who can function at career entry levels and assume their role as health care professionals.

1. Applicants must have completed required Learning Support courses.
2. Applicants must successfully complete the required prerequisite courses as published in the Program of Study curriculum guide.
3. Applicants must have a minimum overall college GPA of 2.5. Preference in program participation may be given to students with the highest GPA.
4. Students with two unsuccessful attempts in MLT program courses at ASU or any other institution are not eligible for admission to ASU MLT Program.
5. Note: Unsuccessful attempts include D’s, F’s, and course withdrawals.

Additional Requirements

1. A minimum grade of “C” is required in each MLT professional course.
2. A physical examination, including proof of MMR x 2, HBV x 3, Varicella x 2 immunizations (or titers to prove immunity) are required. A current flu vaccine, PPD, and other immunizations may be required prior to entry into clinical practicum courses.
3. Students must satisfy admission requirements to Albany State University.
4. Liability insurance is required upon enrollment in any MLT technical course.
5. To satisfactorily complete the curriculum and to develop the skills required of an entry level medical laboratory technician, the student must have:
   1. Visual acuity (with or without corrective lenses) sufficient to differentiate colors used as reaction indicators; to observe the patient during phlebotomy procedure; to differentiate and identify specimens utilizing microscopic examination; to read laboratory manuals, procedure, policies, specimen labels, test requisitions and other materials pertinent to professional practice;
   2. Physical ability to manipulate clinical laboratory instruments and equipment in a manner consistent with operational procedures;
   3. Manual dexterity to perform venipuncture procedures and to operate hand held medical laboratory equipment and tools in a manner consistent with operational guidelines.
