Upon completion of this course, the student will: 1. Distinguish between behaviors that foster and those that hinder well-being and determine which behaviors place a person at risk for health-compromising conditions. 2. Interpret physical, environmental, social, emotional, and intellectual factors that influence health behaviors and that hinder positive health behavior change and maintenance. 3. Identify appropriate data-gathering instruments that assess personal health risks and health behavior used to develop goals and objectives for an individual-level behavior change project or prescription. 4. Explore ethical issues associated with behavior change modalities. 5. Explain behavior change theories and models and how they can be applied to aid clients change behavior. 6. Summarize how behavioral counseling skills can be used to increase behavior change adherence and success. 7. Use social change theories to explain the impact of social, cultural, and environmental norms on individual, group, and community health behaviors.
