GRU offers new M.Ed programs beginning in Spring 2014

Starting this spring, Georgia Regents University (GRU) is offering two new Master of Education (M.Ed) programs completely online. These are the first online programs for the GRU College of Education.

The master’s degree programs in Teacher Leadership and in Curriculum and Instruction are designed so they can be completed in 12 months if students take full course loads. This sets them apart from many other similar online programs.

“It is not easy, but it’s doable. You have to be disciplined and engaged in the course,” said Wayne Lord, interim associate dean of Graduate Programs. “We have been successful with students completing degrees in 12 months.”

The Master’s of Education in Teacher Leadership is a performance-based program designed to prepare classroom teachers to assume greater leadership responsibilities beyond the classroom without leaving the classroom teaching position. The program provides the knowledge and skills required for leadership roles not usually afforded in traditional classroom teacher training programs.

The Master’s of Education in Curriculum and Instruction is designed for candidates who already hold a valid teaching certificate and desire an advanced degree. The program includes field assignments, an electronic portfolio in addition to assignments, and key assessments that demonstrate their knowledge and ability with the conceptual framework principles of the College of Education.

“Currently we offer both degrees face-to-face and online,” said Lord. “In the next few years we hope online interest will grow and online will be sole delivery method.”

During the design stages of the programs, Lord said the master’s in Teacher Leadership went through an external review. In doing so they learned the importance of having a consistent structure throughout the program and engagement among students. They used this review to apply the same experiences to the Curriculum and Instruction program.

Both programs are aligned with National Accreditation Council for Teacher Education (NCATE) and Georgia Professional Standards Commission Standards.
