Full Description

The primary goals of the Political Science program are to provide students with a broad academic base within the discipline and the opportunity for practical experiences related to the development of marketable skills. Curriculum offerings are designed to introduce students to all of the main divisions within the field while providing them with experience essential for the integration of history and practice through carefully supervised internships.

Special Requirements

The B.A. in Political Science covers the five broad subfields of Political Science: American National Government, Comparative Politics, International Relations, Public Administration, and Political Theory/Research Methods. Students take some required courses in each of these subfields, in addition to elective courses from the subfields in which they wish to develop special competencies.

This program has the same requirements as the traditional B.A. in Political Science with the exception that online or approved non-credit health and physical education activities will be substituted for the required health and physical education classes in the traditional program.

Other cost considerations:
    Students enrolled in all on-line courses are required to pay $189.00 per credit hour taken (189.00 x 12 credit hours equal = 2268.00) plus the Student Center/Multi-Use Fee of $128.00 and the Institutional Fee of $250.00. This does not include textbook costs, science labs, possible off campus proctoring fees.

Financial Aid Notes

Financial Aid eligibility is reestablished each year beginning with the Fall semester, therefore, students must re-apply annually. FAFSA applications are available each year beginning in January. Applicants who apply early generally experience fewer delays in processing. First consideration will be given to students whose applications are received by the established deadlines.

Credit Transfer Policy

The last thirty upper division hours should be taken from Fort Valley State University and the last semester should be "in residence" (online from FVSU). Students who have earned A.S. degrees will be advised on how their coursework applies to the B.A. in Political Science.

Special Credit Transfer Information

A prior learning assessment program exists whereby up to 30 hours of coursework may be earned through assessment of the learning outcomes of those courses.
Students with the A.S. degree in Political Science should contact the FVSU Political advisor, Dr. Jerry Murtagh murtaghj@fvsu.edu, to find out how their coursework will apply to the requirements for the B.A. in Political Science.

Application Requirements

Traditional Freshman

Traditional Freshman are applicants currently completing their high school requirements, or candidates that have graduated within five years and have no college attendance prior to enrolling.

Non-Traditional

Non-Traditional students are those who have been out of high school or whose high school class graduated at least five years ago from an accredited or approved high school or have satisfactorily completed the GED. Also, applicants in this category who have attended college must have earned fewer than 30 semester hours of transferable credit and not attended college within the past 5 years.

Transfer Students

Transfer applicants are students who matriculated at a college or university after completing high school.
