Full Description

The online program in M.Ed. major in Science Education is offered through the Georgia ONmyLINE (GOML) system. GOML provides access to a full array of online and distance education offerings from the 31 colleges and universities in the University System of Georgia. The M.Ed. major in Science Education Online Program is a separate but parallel program to the traditional Master of Education in Science that has been offered at Georgia State University as a major since Fall 1982, and it is designed for teachers who are already certified in science at the secondary level. This program will provide students an opportunity to expand their knowledge of science content which will aid them in implementing a standards based curriculum. If teachers become proficient in their implementation of a standards based curriculum then ultimately student performance will improve as well as their knowledge of science. In addition to strengthening their knowledge base, the M.Ed. Science Education (GOML) will enhance the teaching dispositions of the participants which will provide them opportunities to deepen their understandings of learners from diverse backgrounds and to explore issues of equity in the science classroom. A need exists for science teachers to expand their knowledge of research; therefore, program participants will be expected to engage in action research in the context of their own classrooms in order to inform instruction, and to share the knowledge gained in a professional community of teachers. The ultimate goal of the program is to engage teachers in advanced courses that will strengthen their scientific content and broaden their pedagogical practices. In general the Program of Study is framed by the principles and standards of the National Science Standards and the core propositions of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.

This entirely online 36 hour program [9 hours of college core courses; 9 hours science education, 15 hours of science (biology, chemistry, physics, astronomy, etc.), 3 hours of teachers and technology] is designed to be completed in four semesters. The M.Ed. major in Science Education Online Program will be available to teachers holding a clear and renewable certificate in science.

◾With the consent of their advisor, students select from among 6000 - 8000 level courses with prefixes ASTR, BIOL, GEOL, GEOG, PHIL, PHYS, or NSCI, related to science in terms of its history, philosophy, conceptual underpinnings, applications and relationships to the secondary curriculum.

◦Students must complete a portfolio as an exit requirement.

Special Requirements

In addition to the coursework, development and completion of a LiveText e-Portfolio is required for successful completion of the program. The e-Portfolio is intended to measure growth as a professional through an action research project based on the Extended Georgia Framework for Teaching. All students are required to submit an e-Portfolio maintained within LiveText. Students will need to purchase a LiveText keycode.

LIVE-TEXT INSTRUCTONS

1. Purchase a keycode from the Department of Middle-Secondary Education and Instructional Technology. Use this form to purchase the keycode.

2. Go to http://www.college.livetext.com/

3. Register your account using th LiveText keycode you purchased. [Select school - Georgia State University-College of Education]

4. Once you are registered and logged in, you will see a tab labed MY DESK. If you ever get "lost," you can return tothe document by clicking this tab.

5. Click on CREATE. 1) Choose a folder [choose MSIT Language, Literacy & Social Studies]; 2) Choose a template; 3) In the box for "Title", write your name and the name of your program; 4) Click on "CREATE DOCUMENT", this will take you to the document.

6. Various "pages" for the portfolio will be listed on the left-hand side of the screen. Clicking on the title page will take you to that page.

7. You will notice that each page is composed of one or more sections. To add text to a section, click on "Edit" (NOT "Edit page"). You can replace the existing text with the text for your narratives. (Note: When pasting from another source, use the PLAIN TEXT feature on the menu bar. Failure to do this may result in difficulties with editing.)

8. Artifacts may be added as IMAGES or ATTACHMENTS. Only one image may be added for each section, but you can add multiple attachments. Both IMAGES and ATTACHMENTS are created in much the same way as in email programs.

9. To send your portfolio, locate SUBMIT FOR REVIEW in the bar at top of page. Click on this, and you will see a pop-up box. Type a few letters of the last name of a person to whom you wish to send your portfolio. If more than one name pops up, select the correct one and then ENTER. You may add as many names as you wish in this way. When you are finished, hit SUBMIT. (You will not get a confirmation that the document has been submitted.) Click on the small X in upper right-hand corner to close the window. You have now given access to your portfolio to the recipients you selected. They will have continuous access until you delete their names from your list.

10. When your document has been reviewed, go to the sidebar and click on REVIEWS. Find your document and open it. You can see the reviews for each section. To see your assessment, click on VIEW ASSESSMENT at the top of the page.

To be reviewed for Quick Admit (First Semester), applicants must submit the following:
1) GeorgiaONmyLINE (GOML) online application
2) $50 application fee
3.) Clear and Renewable T4 certification in Science

Completion of the Quick Admission process does not guarantee admissions the GOML program.

To be reviewed for full admission, Quick Admit students must complete all admissions requirements by the end of the first semester they are enrolled.

All applicants must submit the following information to be considered a fully admitted GOML student.

Minimum requirements for entry into program:
1. GRE score, verbal and quantitative combined, taken within the last 5 years; no min. score required
2. Clear and Renewable T4 Certificate in Science
3. undergraduate degree in Science and/or Science Education
4. 2.5 Undergraduate GPA
5. 2 copies of official transcripts from all higher educational institutions you have attended
6. 2 letters of recommendation from persons able to judge academic and teaching potential
7. A resume
8. A statement of career goals (one page essay explaining how you intend to use this degree in your field)
