Full Description

 

The B.A. in Criminal Justice provides knowledge of the foundations, principles and procedures of the criminal justice system. The program deals with the three components of the criminal justice system: law enforcement, courts, and corrections. All students become acquainted with these areas and with the application of other bodies of knowledge to the criminal justice system.

Campus Attendance Requirements

No campus visits.  All coursework and assignments conducted online.

Special Requirements

This program has the same requirements as the traditional B.A. in Criminal Justice with the exception that online or approved non-credit health and physical education activities will be substituted for the required health and physical education classes in the traditional program. See your advisor, Michael Qualls, qualls@fvsu.edu, for instructions on how to select health and physical education activities and get them approved.

Students with the A.S. degree in Criminal Justice should contact the FVSU Criminal Justice advisor, Michael Qualls, qualls@fvsu.edu, to find out how their coursework will apply to the requirements for the B.A. in Criminal Justice.
Internet access is required. High speed internet access is preferred.

Financial Aid Notes

April 15 is the priority deadline for applying for financial aid for 2009-2010. The FAFSA must be completed for financial aid to be processed. Students who have attended technical colleges are advised to earn the Associate's Degree before applying in order to avoid excessive attempted hours being counted towards financial aid eligibility.

Credit Transfer Policy

The last thirty upper division hours should be taken from Fort Valley State University and the last semester should be "in residence" (online from FVSU). Students who have earned A.S. degrees will be advised on how their coursework applies to the B.A. in Criminal Justice.

Special Credit Transfer Information

A prior learning assessment program exists whereby up to 30 hours of coursework may be earned through assessment of the learning outcomes of those courses.

Admissions

Traditional freshmen are applicants who have been out of high school less than five years from an accredited or approved high school.

Traditional Freshmen Admission Requirements:
Required minimum score on the SAT/ACT. The minimum scores for tests are:

Critical Thinking 430
Math 400
ACT:
English 17
Math 17
Academic Grade Point Average 2.25 (based on the 16 CPC units only)
Have completed the required 16 College Preparatory Curriculum courses.


Transfer students are considered for admission subject to certain conditions.

Transfer from a fully accredited college or university.
Have a cumulative grade point average of 2.00 or better (computed on all hours attempted at previously attended colleges and/or universities).
Submit official transcripts from all institutions previously attended.
Be eligible to return to the college or university from which he/she is transferring (i.e. the student has not been dismissed for academic or other reasons).
Must meet Freshman Requirements (as stated under Traditional Freshmen Requirements) if transferable hours are less than 30 semester/45 quarter hours.

Students with an A.S. degree from an accredited college may be admitted.
Submit official transcripts from all institutions previously attended.
Be eligible to return to the college or university from which he/she is transferring (i.e. the student has not been dismissed for academic or other reasons).

Traditional Freshmen:

A complete Certificate of Immunization form
An official high school transcript.
An official SAT or ACT score. Test scores must be sent directly from the testing service or must be submitted on an official high school transcript.
An official college transcript (if applicable) from each college attended (less than 30 semester transferable hours)
(Applicants who are currently attending high school should submit a preliminary transcript. Upon high school graduation, an official final high school transcript must be submitted to the Office of Admissions. You will not be allowed to register for classes until we receive your FINAL high school transcript.)

Non-traditional Freshmen:
Non-Traditional freshmen are applicants who have been out of high school or whose high school class graduated at least five years ago from an accredited or approved high school or have satisfactorily completed the GED. Also, applicants in this category who have attended college must have earned fewer than 30 semester hours of transferable credit and have not attended college within the past five years.

Applicants eligible for review in this category are exempt from the SAT/ACT and College Preparatory Curriculum (CPC) requirements. However, students admitted in the non-traditional category must take the COMPASS at no charge. Applicants are also required to have an academic GPA of 2.0 (based on all academic courses).
